The City of West Toronto Celebrates 100 Years

On April 14, 1908 the City of West Toronto, more commonly known as The Junction, was incorporated by the Province of Ontario.  With the Dundas Highway (Dundas St. W.) as its main street, its own customs house, an important trade and train destination, plus the liberal minds and unprecedented growth and optimism of its residents, the Junction was moving into the future as one of the largest cities in Ontario.  The residents dreamed of what was to become of their newly found city.

It was to be short-lived.  One year and nineteen days after incorporation, the Junction was amalgamated into the City of Toronto which at the time was facing bankruptcy and needed the Junction to raise money through taxes.

The rest, as they say is history.  And oh, what a history.

In 2008, the Junction Forum for Art and Culture along with the Junction Business Improvement Area, the West Toronto Junction Historical Society and the West Bend Residents Association, will be marking that critical turning point in our city's history with centennial celebrations.

Special events will transport you into the past, connect you to the present and explore the dreams of the future.  Art installations, murals, audio histories, pictorial archives, guided tours, train rides, personal stories and more are being planned centering around the 2008 Junction Arts Festival in September.

The first event will be the "Junction City" Weekend on April 12 - 14, 2008.

Check back often, as events will be added on a regular basis.
