100 FLAGS CAMPAIGN and LOCAL OPTION ART AWARDS
The West Toronto
Junction Historical Society Centennial Committee is launching the 100 Flags
Campaign. It is our goal to
have at least one hundred flags flying on the day of the Centennial, April 14,
2008: any flag you like. Or create
your own Junction Flag. We’ll keep the
campaign rolling through the summer with the hope of 1,000 flags up throughout
the community for the Arts Festival in September. The 100 Flags Campaign was
designed to promote the Local Option Art Awards and to bring the
community together for the Centennial. At this point we have 16 Junction
Business Improvement Area venues lined up to host artwork for the Local Option Art Awards which are
sponsored by Mariposa County artist Michael Reeves. More than 40 artists who
have responded to a public call will vie for $1,000 first prize, $500 second prize and $250 third prize which
will be awarded to winners determined by public vote throughout the Junction
between the Centennial weekend and the Arts Festival in September. A winning voter will receive Reid English’s sculpture,
“Spirit of the Junction,” specially commissioned by the Institute of Canadian
Popular Culture. All winners to be
announced on the last day of the Arts Festival and awards will be presented at
a WTJHS fundraiser in October. WTJHS is launching this campaign in the
memory of Enoch Ward, who flew a solitary flag to commemorate the birth of
“Junction City,” so that we might celebrate the independent spirit in all of us
and participate in the Art of Democracy.

Opening Night Galas May 3, 2008
Exhibits May 1 to May 31, 2008
Photographers, artists and the greater community will again
converge in Toronto’s historic Junction neighbourhood for the sixth annual CONTACT in the Junction Opening Night
Gala on May 3, 2008. The work of professional, emerging and
established photographers from the Junction and around the world will transform
eighteen local businesses into impromptu galleries for this annual event that
brings photography to the street.
“CONTACT in the Junction is a unique
opportunity for the neighbourhood to mingle with the arts” states Bonnie
McKenzie, Chair of the Junction BIA. “The atmosphere on the street is electric
as the public travels throughout the Junction to enjoy both the photography and
the diverse collection of stores, restaurants and cafes that make the community
come alive.”
Public
openings will be held at all eighteen impromptu galleries from 6:00pm to 9:00pm
on Saturday May 3, 2008. This will
be followed by CONTACT in the Junction’s premier event, an outdoor screening of
“The
Junction: Yesterday to Today” running from 9:00pm to 10:00pm, at the “Junction
City” Square, 3 blocks west of Keele at Pacific and Dundas Street West. This screening, presented in
association with the West Toronto Junction Historical Society, will feature
local Junction photographers from the past 100 years showcasing the changes in
the community and the arts.

Summer Camp - "Junction City" Centennial week
July 21 - 25, 2008
Junction Day Care Centre is celebrating the Centennial of “Junction City” during the week of July 21-25. Gib Good fellow, President of West Toronto Junction Historic Society and grandfather to one of our Junction Daycare children will accompany us on our walk from the day camp down to High Park on Wednesday morning. He’ll point out the mansions along the route and we’ll find out who used to live in them long ago. At the park, we’ll visit Colborne Lodge, home of the founders of High Park, and follow our visit up with time in the adventure playground and a picnic. Gib will also take our children on a walking tour of landmarks right in our neighbourhood on Friday afternoon. The children will discover the history of Annette Library, Victoria Lofts, the Fire Hall, Bank of Montreal, James Hall and art galleries of Dundas. The children will be encouraged to create their own art to celebrate the Junction Centennial. The day camp will take one trip out of the area to visit Toronto’s First Post Office on Thursday morning and ask them about the robbery of the royal mail coach at the former Peacock Hotel, now Coffee Time Donuts in the Junction.

Have fun making lanterns out of cans, sticks and tissue paper (bring your own or use ours).
June 21, 2008, 7:30pm
The Junction Communities in Bloom Committee invites you and your family to The Junction Night of Lights at the Junction City Station on Saturday, June 21st. The fun begins with the creation of lanterns out of cans, sticks and tissue paper (at the Station on Saturday June 7th
and Saturday June 14th at 2 PM). When the sun has set on the 21st, we will walk from the Station together through our interesting alleys,
lively side streets and along the main drag. Come out and celebrate our community and the winding ways of our neighbourhood. Come and have a good time, because the more people that participate, the more light we will shed.
